The term gothic refers to that artistic style of the 19th century which was anti-classical and filled with a sense of the dark and the supernatural. Today these elements exist, whether in a 2006 goth prom dress or one of the goth plus-size dresses (a great statement for the less svelt girl!).

The elegant, historically-inspired style, often involving chiffon petticoats, antique lace, intricate brocades, and corsetry is another prominent style of gothic fashion. This is sometimes known as "romantic goth" or "romantigoth" . Most variants of gothic fashion incorporate some facet of this classic style.
Gothic Prom Dresses are not all in black---although that is a favorite color. They can also be in rich colors such as red, purple, and even pink. Popular goth prom looks include the use of tight corsets and satin and lace, along with gothic jewelry, to accentuate that medieval look.
